SURABAYA, PINUSPRESS – 3 people were dead after they clashed with the train passing on a viaduct. This happened when a lot of people were inappropriately watching ‘Drama Kolosal Surabaya’ (Colossal Drama Surabaya) from a viaduct. The drama was held in Jalan Pahlawan in Surabaya and the incident happened on a viaduct in front of the Main Office of East Java Governor.
‘Drama Kolosal Surabaya’ is an annual event that is held since 2011. The drama is usually held during ‘Hari Pahlawan Nasional’ (National day of Patriots) and the story of the drama usually revolves around the journey of how all the patriots were fighting against the Dutch and Japan colonial during the colonization period. This year, the drama is lead by the Head of Arts of East Java, Taufik ‘Monyong’ Hidayat who is also the scriptwriter for this year’s drama. The show started at 18.00 on 9th November 2018 and it lasted for 90 minutes.
The people has been given a proper audience dock to view the drama but some people choose
to go on the viaduct to see the show from above. They said that it had a better view compared to the given audience dock. The tragedy happened at around 19.45, when a commodity train from Gubeng station going to Turi Market station passed through the viaduct. Since there were a lot of people on the viaduct, a lot of people panicked and the accident happened. A few people slipped down and 3 of them got knocked down below the train and got ran over by the train.
By right, watching on the viaduct is prohibited because it is dangerous and strictly for the use of the commodity train to pass through. The Mayor of Surabaya, Tri Rismaharini also stated that she has never given any permission for people to watch the drama from the viaduct.
Until now, the identity of the injured people has been identified but the dead is yet to be identified because there is no ID that can clearly prove their identity.
